Luca Guadagnino’s film about Sam Altman, titled Artificial, has been dropped by Amazon MGM. That’s the word from Deadline, and it’s a bit of a surprise given the talent involved.
The movie covers the chaotic five days in 2023 when Altman was fired and then reinstated as OpenAI CEO. Andrew Garfield plays Altman, Monica Barbaro plays CTO Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz plays Elon Musk, and Yura Borisov plays Ilya Sutskever. Solid cast, no doubt.
Amazon MGM said in a statement that the film “will be better served if it were released by a different studio” and that they’re “working closely with the filmmakers” to find a new distributor. That’s corporate speak for “we’re out, good luck.”
I’m not entirely surprised. The tech world moves fast, and by the time this film was ready, the Altman drama might have felt stale to general audiences. Plus, Guadagnino is a director known for more artistic, slower-burn films like Call Me by Your Name and Suspiria. A tech biopic about a CEO’s firing is an odd fit for his style, and maybe Amazon MGM realized that.
Still, the film has been in development for about a year, and with this cast, someone will pick it up. Maybe Netflix or Apple will take a swing. After all, tech dramas are their bread and butter these days.
I’ll be curious to see where it lands. The story of Altman’s firing and reinstatement is genuinely wild — boardroom coups, employee revolts, and a CEO who came back stronger. If Guadagnino can capture that chaos, it could be a great film. But it needs a studio willing to take a risk.
