Musk on the Stand: Flat, Unprepared, and All About Himself

Elon Musk took the stand today as the first witness in his own lawsuit against Sam Altman. I’ve seen him in court before—during his defamation trial, he turned on the charm and walked away with a not-guilty verdict. This time was different. He looked flat. Adrift. Unprepared.

The only moments he showed any real energy were when he was talking about himself. Specifically, how much he’d done for OpenAI. That’s a weird look for a lawsuit that’s supposed to be about Sam Altman straying from the company’s original mission. Instead of building a clear narrative, Musk spent a strange amount of time reciting his own accomplishments.

Direct examination is supposed to tell a story through questions. You want the jury to follow a clean thread. Musk’s team didn’t seem to have one. Or if they did, Musk wasn’t interested in following it. He kept circling back to his own contributions, like a guy who walked into court hoping to be praised rather than heard.

I get it—he’s proud of what he helped start. But this suit isn’t about his legacy. It’s about whether Altman broke promises. And Musk spent more time polishing his own image than making that case. That’s not just bad strategy. It’s petty.

Elon Musk in front of a background of justice scales.

Maybe he’ll recover on cross. Maybe his team will redirect better tomorrow. But first impressions matter, and this one was flat. If you’re going to drag Sam Altman to court over mission drift, you’d better show up ready to talk about something other than yourself. Musk didn’t.
