Barret Zoph is out at OpenAI again. Five months after walking back through the door, he’s gone.
The Verge broke the news that Zoph — who was leading OpenAI’s enterprise AI sales push — has departed. This isn’t a dramatic firing or a scandal. It’s just another high-profile exit at a company that’s been bleeding senior talent faster than most startups can hire it.
Zoph originally left OpenAI in late 2024 to co-found Thinking Machines Lab with former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. That startup was supposed to be a serious competitor. Then, in mid-January 2026, Zoph returned. OpenAI positioned him as the point person for enterprise sales — a role that mattered more than ever, since the company had publicly promised to stop chasing “side quests” and focus on what actually makes money: enterprise deals and coding products. The IPO clock was ticking.
And now he’s gone again.
I’ll be honest: this doesn’t surprise me. OpenAI’s leadership churn has become a running joke in the industry. Every few months, another key figure walks out the door. Sam Altman is still there, sure, but the bench keeps getting thinner. Zoph’s exit is particularly awkward because OpenAI had just bet big on enterprise sales as a revenue pillar. Losing the guy you put in charge of that — five months in — is not a good look.
OpenAI confirmed the departure to The Verge but didn’t offer much detail. No dramatic statement. No blame game. Just a quiet acknowledgment that Zoph is gone.
What happens next? OpenAI will probably promote from within or hire someone new. But the pattern is clear: people keep leaving, and the company keeps saying everything is fine. At some point, investors and customers are going to stop buying that.
For Zoph, this is his second exit from OpenAI in under two years. He’s young, talented, and has options. I doubt he’ll be unemployed for long.
For OpenAI, the question isn’t just who replaces Zoph. It’s whether the company can hold onto anyone long enough to execute its IPO story. Right now, the narrative is getting harder to sell.
