Smart glasses have been stuck in a weird limbo for years — cool demos, endless promises, but nothing you’d actually want to wear every day. Qualcomm, the chipmaker that powers most of these things, just announced the Snapdragon Reality Elite at Augmented World Expo, and it might be the kick in the pants the category needs.

I say “might” because we’ve been burned before. But the specs here are actually impressive for a wearable chip. The GPU gets a 60 percent bump over whatever came before, which is the kind of number that usually translates to noticeably smoother visuals and better rendering of AR overlays. That’s critical when you’re trying to make digital objects feel like they’re really sitting in your living room, not just floating awkwardly.

The timing is interesting. We technically already got a hands-on with a device using this chip last month at Google I/O — the upcoming Aura glasses for Android XR. At the time, Xreal and Google were weirdly coy about what processor was inside those long-awaited spectacles. Now we know: it was the Reality Elite. I’m guessing they were under NDA, but it’s still funny watching companies play coy with hardware that’s literally strapped to their faces.

What I actually want to know is whether this chip fixes the two biggest problems with current smart glasses: battery life and heat. Nobody wants to wear something that gets warm on your face after 20 minutes, and nobody wants to recharge them every hour. Qualcomm didn’t give specifics on power efficiency in the announcement, which makes me suspicious. If they had a huge breakthrough there, they’d be shouting it from the rooftops.

Still, a 60 percent GPU uplift is real. And if the Aura glasses are the first to ship with this chip, they could actually be the first pair of smart glasses that don’t feel like a compromise. We’ll see when they hit the market later this year.
